Fear not. I am not (unfortunately) a glossy-haired fitness enthusiast with a perfect home and accessories for my avocados.
Like most people, I’m a bit of a fixer-upper.
But, I am a 21st century woman with many choices, privileges and advantages in life. I’m also a little *ahem* … unconventional, and I enjoy the process of blending my hippie and my muggle needs in one uncommon life.
More about me
Originally from North Wales, I’m a middle child, leftie, softie (most of the time) and utter hippie, with a hard edge of mugglish practicality that won’t be denied.
I’ve lived in a yurt, helped build a subterranean temple, created a magazine, lived with a bad wizard, run a vegan dessert café, worked at a faery-themed bar, a hippie retreat and a witchcraft shop, and I’ve walked on hot coals.
I’ve done a lot of weird stuff, which I think gives me a unique perspective. And when I got married, I added my husband’s surname, Common, to my own. But, life is anything but ordinary. Hence: Uncommon Writer.
What is Uncommon Writer?
Uncommon Writer is about conscious, natural and eco-friendly living – versus reality.
In real life, staying mindful, healthy, kind, nourished, balanced and in-tune is not that easy. I’m so not into the tyranny of positivity. I never want you to feel that your struggles are not valid after reading Uncommon Writer.
Like me, you may be learning to balance your commitments with your aspirations. Here, you’ll find methods that are a little unusual.
I still want to be a millionaire-vegan-philanthropist-artist-writer-entrepreneur-yogi, of course. But I’ll be taking it step-by-step and sharing those steps with you.
This is an important one! Great writers often feel they’re being copied, and they’re absolutely right. Writers are known borrowers of language and ideas, and I’m no exception. I absorb words, phrases and ideas from awesome hoomans everywhere.
My favourite bloggers include some people I know in real life, like Claire from Fire Lotus Fitness, whose brand of body-positive, inspirational fitness-geekery strikes the right chord with me (she’s also my PT). Jenny and Nick from Health Wisdom Institute provide answers to some of the most important and misunderstood health and wellness questions – without the judgements. Lisa Lister of Sassy She has a style that makes her instantly recognisable – I think we all want that.
My other online heroes include Angela Liddon of Oh She Glows, whose recipes and personal updates I adore, and prolific astrologer Chani Nicholas, whose site is just so damn gorgeous! I also love Mind Body Green, because what’s not to love?
My last shout out goes to Zaianb of Serendipy Spin, a great writer and all-round wonderful hooman, whose influence I’m sure you can see in this post. Check out her brilliant and funny intro post – in my defence, I did warn her I’d be shamelessly borrowing from it!
If you have any thoughts or comments on the blog, I’d love to hear them. Leave a comment below or get in touch via my Facebook profile (send me a message to let me know you’re a reader!) or the Facebook page. Please get in touch if you have your own uncommon coping mechanisms, little wonders or insights into conscious, natural living. I’d love to hear from you.
